Beowulf
I believe Unferth was trying to do this to get everyone to realize that all Beowulf wants is to be known for his accomplishments. He feels Beowulf is only helping people for popularity and not for the mere fact of using your gift for the greater good of the people. Unferth probably did this because he wants people to realize him as the real hero. He wants to be known as the fighter who’s better than Beowulf so he’s trying to point out everything that he thinks Beowulf is infamous for. This is to get him known as the hero, rather than a lesser version of Beowulf. Beowulf first replies by saying that Unferth's accusations were caused by his drinking. He then went on to talk about how they both boasted when they were young hinting that if Becca were to win he would have done the same thing. Following that, Beowulf tells of how he's the best and that Becca would never have been able to beat him. This shows he's a hero because he doesn't think he's the best, he knows it. This is a real characteristic in a hero because they have no doubt that anything they attempt to do they will succeed in. Beowulf also never really disagreed with the comments that Unferth was saying. He knows that he will always brag about his accomplishments but the real deal is that Beowulf just knows that he’ll be good at everything. He doesn’t do it for bragging rights but more to prove to himself that he’s the best at everything he attempts.
