UM Actions

The Underground Man’s actions can be described in many ways. For one, he is extremely creepy and focused on getting revenge on anyone who he feels has wronged him. He is also very self-conscious making sure that people also think of him the way that he feels he should be thought of as. An example of this is when an officer moves him out the way. The Underground Man finds this very unpleasing and disrespectful. He shows the officer he shouldn’t be messed with by dressing in different clothes and making sure he bumps into him again. His plan works but the officer doesn’t even notice him. He fails at his awkward and creepy attempt in making a statement with this officer. The story then goes on to tell of a dinner party that the Underground Man is going to attend with some school friends. He never liked these people but decided to meet up with them anyways. The Underground Man never gets the memo that the time has been moved forward an hour. He shows up and waits and once the party arrives he begins to yell at them and show how unjust their actions were. He really enjoys others discomfort to make a point. The Underground Man also finds his one love, which is a prostitute. This also shows how twisted the man is. He feels he’s much more intelligent than the soldier and his high school “friend” Zverkov and it seems he needs to ensure this by kicking them down a few notches. He always tries to prove things to himself and I think this is a great example of that.

Rooster

Rooster is a perfect example of an anti-hero. An anti-hero is someone who has the potential to be a hero but isn't or a person who is a hero but doesn't show the stereotypical heroic values. Rooster seems to be the type of anti-hero who is a hero but just doesn’t show the heroic traits that are expected. He has an eye patch and is infamous for being a killer. An eye patch is something that most villains would normally have. Rooster, however, still possesses this eye patch and is still the man who protects the towns people from harm. He is also well known for being a scary killer. This is another trait that you wouldn’t normally expect from a hero. Still, he is saving the town. Him killing these people prevent them from doing anymore harm to the town. It’s sort of like Spiderman killing villains that destroy the town, except Spiderman is more known for saving the people rather than how he saved these people. Rooster is also rude to Matty when she first tries to meet with him. He ends up ignoring her call for help and later slamming the door in her face. This shows that he doesn’t care about anyone else but himself. He’s just doing the job sort of because he feels he’s destined to. He feels a need to catch these criminals, which sort of seems like his heroic call to action. He really is a hero but simply doesn’t possess the traits that most people think heroes would possess.

chapters 1 and 2 underground man

The underground man seems like such a depressing person. He has a lot of doubt in himself and the first thing he says in chapter two is that he wishes to become an insect but that he's not even good enough for that. The underground man believes that he is worthless and can do nothing to improve the way he is. He lives in Petersburg and feels that everyone who lives there is very unlucky and that it's the worst place in the world to live. The underground man seems to feel that everything in his life doesn't go his way. For some reason he believes that consciousness is a disease and that it's better to not have it at all. He also seems to go against his beliefs a lot. During the part where he talked about his liver disease he said that he wouldn't go to the doctors and that he was superstitious; but for some reason, he still greatly supports the use doctors and medicines. He did later say that people pride themselves on diseases and that he most certainly did so maybe that’s the reason that he won’t get his liver disease fixed. Maybe it’s this liver disease that he feels makes him have some kind of meaning and allows him to gain some acknowledgement from those around him. He did previously talk about how he was in the government and that he used to be rude to everyone around him for his own self-amusement. Maybe he doesn’t care about what others think at all. He’s such an odd complex man that it’s hard to tell what kind of person he really is.
